Forcing himself to move, Max rolled over next to Gracie on the bed. As he stared at the ceiling, the same questions played over and over in his mind. What had he done? What had he been thinking?
Hell, thinking hadn’t entered into it. He’d wanted her too damned badly to think at all. If he had stopped to consider, even for a moment, he would have recognized the signs. No wonder she’d seemed so shy at times. Innocent. Untouched. Gracie was innocent. Or she had been, until he’d come along and—
“What’s wrong?” she asked, interrupting his litany of self-castigation. “Didn’t you like it?”
Shocked at the question, he turned his head to stare at her.
“Like it? Did I like making love to you?”
Having risen on her elbow to look at him, she nodded. Her face still held a glow—the glow of passion slaked. She looked tumbled, drowsy, and so damn sexy he wanted her again. Now.
He scowled. “Of course I liked it. It was fantastic. Amazing. But that’s not the point.”
Her lips curved into a smug smile.
“Fantastic. Hmm, I like that. I thought so too.” The smile took on a seductive tilt.
His stomach clenched. “Stop smiling at me like that.” No way, he wouldn’t do it again.
“Why? That’s what I do when I’m happy.”
“You should be upset. Angry. Anything but happy.” He got out of bed and got rid of the condom before grabbing his jeans. “I’m not the man you should have chosen to be your first.” An understatement if ever he’d heard one. Stepping into his pants, he jerked them up over his hips and zipped them.
“You’re exactly the man I should have chosen. You made it wonderful for me.”
“You’re not experienced enough to make that call.” He strode to the bathroom, returning a minute later with a warm, wet washcloth.
“Here,” he said, handing it to her.
Unwilling to watch her wash away the evidence of her innocence, he paced the room, raking his hands through his hair.
“Good God, a virgin,” he muttered.
“We might be a dying breed, but there are still some of us around,” she said dryly.
Over his shoulder, he shot her a grim look. “Yeah, well, there’s one less now.”
“It’s not a disease, Max. Haven’t you ever been with a virgin before?”
His back to her once again, he nearly laughed. Since Marla’s death, his lovers had invariably been experienced women who knew what they wanted and agreed with his terms. No emotional involvement, just good sex. Gracie didn’t know those rules.
“Not in years,” he said. “Not since my wife.”
“You’re . . . married?”
At the whispered distress in her voice, he turned around to look at her. The washcloth, tinged with her blood, lay on the floor beside the bed. She’d pulled the sheet up over her breasts and clutched it to her chest. Her expression held shock, dismay—and to his shame, self-blame. Great, now she thought he was a philanderer. And blamed herself for sleeping with him, no doubt. Even if he was a defiler of innocents, he could set her mind at rest about one thing.
